Virtual Auditions are Due August 31, 2026

Non-equity auditions are now open for the world premiere of Everybody's Son, a new musical by Aaron Alon and Alric Davis. This will be a coproduction between Thunderclap Productions and the Sankofa Collective.

About the Show

Everybody’s Son is a musical adaptation of the celebrated novel by Thrity Umrigar. When nine-year-old Anton, a Black boy from Brooklyn, is picked up by child protective services after his mother disappears, he's taken in by the Colemans, a wealthy white family mourning the loss of their teenage son. Anton's birth mother is found after being held captive by her drug dealer, but the Colemans use their immense power and influence to keep her away and adopt Anton. Years later, Anton, now a Harvard graduate in a tight race for the governorship, unexpectedly receives a letter from his birth mother – a letter that threatens his campaign and risks rewriting his entire life story. A gripping new musical, Everybody's Son takes audiences on a journey through American systems of power, class, race, and privilege, all while telling a deeply moving story of identity and family.

The production is slated to run at the MATCH (Matchbox 1) in Houston, Texas from July 29 to August 8, 2027.

Available Roles

Auditions are open for all roles.

• ANTON VESPER COLEMAN: A Black man, ages 20-35 over the course of the show. He was raised by a wealthy white family in Connecticut since the age of 9. TENOR
• DAVID COLEMAN: Anton's white adoptive father, middle aged (30s-60s over the course of the show). He's wealthy and privileged and is a career politician from a mainstream democratic political dynasty. BARITENOR
• DELORES "DEE" COLEMAN: Anton's white adoptive mother, middle aged (30s-60s over the course of the show). She's also wealthy and privileged. While guarded at first, as she mourns the loss of her biological son, she proves herself to be a loving mother to Anton. MEZZO
• CARINE: Carine is a progressive radical poet. She's first in line to speak truth to power and doesn't shy away from radical viewpoints. Anton's girlfriend while they're both undergrads at Harvard (and Anton's only Black girlfriend). MEZZO (or SOPRANO)
• JUANITA VESPER: Anton's birth mother, late 20s-early 50s over the course of the show. MEZZO (or SOPRANO)
• YOUNG ANTON/SHAY: One actor plays Anton as a 9-12 year old, a Black boy from the Projects in Brooklyn who finds himself getting fostered by a wealthy white couple, and Shay, Carine's Black or mixed race son of about the same age. UNCHANGED MALE VOICE
• BRADLEY "BRAD": Anton's best friend after he's fostered/adopted by the Colemans and Connor's son. He's toxically masculine when they're Harvard students together, but he grows into a strong campaign manager for Anton. White, ages 20-35 over the course of the show. ANY VOICE
• PAPPY/CONNOR/COP: One middle aged, white actor plays these three roles. Pappy is David's father, a good-natured US senator (mainstream democrat). Connor is David's best friend, Brad's father, and the prosecutor in Juanita's case. The Cop is a racist middle aged white man in Georgia. NON-SINGING (or ensemble singing only)

Vocal Ranges

As some ranges may be adjustable, actors are encouraged to consider roles that may be slightly out of range for them. Parenthetical notes are optional high notes.

Diversity in Casting

Performers of all ethnicities, sexes, gender identities, gender expressions, ages, sexual orientations, and types, as well as performers with disabilities, are invited to take part in any audition. All characters in the show are Black or white. 

What to Prepare

• Acting: Actors have the option to submit a monologue of their choosing, but this is not required at this time. Actors selected for callbacks will be asked to read sides from the script.
• Singing: Please submit 1-2 songs (or excerpts from songs) that give us a good sense of your voice. Please sing with an accompanist or have a second device play a backing/karaoke track as you film your audition.
• Dancing: The show may include movement, but we don't anticipate much choreography. If you have dance experience, please note it in on your résumé.

Pay

Actors cast in these roles will be paid. Pay varies based on size of the role and may be negotiable based on circumstances.
