About the Play
“A poetic and meta-theatrical exploration of the story of outsider artist and savant James Hampton. After his first miraculous vision of the Virgin Mary in the early 1900s, James becomes single mindedly focused on creating a throne fit for God to sit on during Judgement Day using trash scraps such as cardboard, tin foil, light bulbs and couch cushions. When he meets Otelia Whitehead, a beautiful metropolitan woman, both lives intertwine in a way that affects them and all of us, for decades to come.”

About the Playwright
Alric Davis is driven by the age-old tradition of preserving history through storytelling. Since 2013, he has served as the Founding Artistic Director of The Sankofa Collective, a non-profit theatre organization in his hometown Houston, Texas with the purpose to expose, educate and enrich the lives of at-risk communities of color to theatre. He holds a B.F.A. from Howard University with a concentration in Musical Theatre and Playwriting. He is also a freelance performer, director, theatre critic and adjunct instructor in acting, playwriting, slam poetry and choreography. Some of his favorite directing credits are The Color Purple, Twelfth Night, The Bodyguard, Julius Caesar, Eclipsed, Burden of Proof, Marie Antoinette, Next to Normal, Miss Evers Boys, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Wiz (2019 – Broadway World Award winner). Alric is also a commissioned playwright with Remember The Resurrection in 2024 and Reap the Reparations for Theatre Alliance in D.C in 2020. His original play Different, Damaged, Damned appeared at the D.C. Capital Fringe Festival, his work Queen Peaches appeared at The Tank in New York and his play Bashful and the Noize won the 2021 Page to Stage Festival for the Kennedy Center.
About the Playwright
Alric Davis is driven by the age-old tradition of preserving history through storytelling. She had five plays span multiple productions in New York. Recently, she just played Mrs. Lovett in Lone Star College-North Harris’s production of Sweeney Todd.

About the Scene
Three years before the start of the play, Abe and Robert’s adopted son, Jacob, was murdered in a mall shooting. Now, Abe is wanting to adopt again and Robert is hesitant. In this scene, early in the play, the couple has invited Pastor Jen to their home to tell her that they’ve entered this discussion and maybe seek her counsel. (The shooting referenced in the play is fictional.)

The Great White Way: the Bert Williams Musical

About the Musical & Songs
The Great White Way: the Bert Williams Musical is a new musical about the famed comedian, Bert Williams, who was the first major Black star on Broadway. His life in comedy, set against a time of anti-Black race riots throughout the United States, tells the story of the man WC Fields called “the funniest man I ever saw and the saddest man I ever knew.” He was a complicated figure, as both a symbol of racial uplift and a performer who continued to perform in blackface even as the practice was dying out.
“Couldn’t He See?”
This song is sung in Act I by Charlie Fields, a white song-and-dance man who came up in the Vaudeville circuit in Florenz Ziegfeld’s shows. Rehearsing alone one night in 1896, Charlie reflects on his journey to Ziegfeld, a surrogate father after his own family disowned him when he went into show business.
“I Keep Them Laughing” (scene & song)
It’s 1910, and Bert Williams is asked to join the cast of the 1910 Follies. Horrified at the prospect of a Black man as a headliner, Charlie Fields and other white cast members threaten to quit if Bert isn’t fired.
“You Want Rags” (scene & song)
In 1922, and Bert is backstage trying to sleep off a bad cold that’s hung on for four weeks before that evening’s performance. A reporter, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, knocks and says she wants to sell him rags for his ragman costume.
“This is How It’s Done”
Later that evening, Bert is feeling much sicker, both physically and spiritually, after his confrontation with Ida. He’s left alone to black up and prepare to go on, but is now questioning his choices and his own culpability for potentially contributing to racism in America.

About the Writer
Eric C Jones is a Medford, Massachusetts born, Minnesota & Texas raised artist. Mr. Jones is a graduate of Texas Southern University, B.S. Pharmacy. He has been involved with the Christian theater circuit since 1995 as a writer, actor, director and composer. Writing credits includes: Children of the Passage, Three Crosses, Postcard Journeys though Christmas, Hallelujah Follies, Sweet Freedom, American Skin Freedom Quilt, Liberators and Fired! The Musical, American Rifle at the Fade to Black Theater Festival, and Audition at the Fragmentation IV. Acting credits include: The Elder in Children of the Passage, Rev. About the Musical & Songs
This August, Thunderclap Productions presents the world premiere of The Chosen Ones, a riveting new musical by Aaron Alon. Heart-wrenching, hilarious, and ultimately unforgettable, the show follows a group of LGBTQ+ teens in a conversion therapy summer camp, led by an “ex-gay” minister. The Chosen Ones is a timely story of living authentically and finding your chosen family, even when the world tells you not to. This world premiere is part of our John Steven Kellett Memorial Series of works relating to LGBTQ+ equity.
To close out our New Works Festival, we present the song “I’m Going to Church,” sung by Isaac A. Gonzalez, who’s originating the role of Daniel in our production and also sang it on the Concept Cast album. In a small group meeting, Daniel, a gay teen, tells the story of how he tricked his parents into letting him go to gay clubs and hook up with his boyfriend by telling them that he was going to church events instead.

William Grayson
William Grayson is the Director of Theatre and Professor of Drama at Lone Star College-University Park. He holds a BA in Theatre Performance from West Texas A&M University and an MFA in Acting from the University of Arkansas. Williams favorite roles include Michael in God of Carnage, Gus in The Dumb Waiter, Nolan in The Man Without a Country, and Larry in Company. John L. Cornelius, II is a member of ASCAP and the AFofM. He has written several shows including Garfield: The Musical with Cattitude, Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds, Mirandy and Brother Wind, and The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings. His most recent concert works include What Wings They Were (chamber opera), Sweet Freedom’s Song: a Fantasia on the hymn-tune America, The River (MFA-Boston), Colored Carnegie (Urban Souls Dance Company) and PAX (Apollo Chamber Players and Carnegie Hall debut). Dr. Cornelius is a native of Jackson, Mississippi and is Professor of Music at Prairie View A&M University.

Brendan Martinez
Brendan started working as a Live Entertainment Technician for Conroe ISD at the age of 16 while gigging around Houston as a trumpet player. He carried his work along with his passion for music and the arts to Lone Star College-Montgomery in 2017, where he worked as a Theatrical Technician while earning his AA in Music. In the second year of his associate degree, Brendan opened Grand Oaks High School as their only Theatrical Technician. Since then, Brendan has gained a broad range of experience working throughout the greater Houston area as a lighting and audio technician, as well as a composer, producer, and performer. He was also the founding Music Director at a local School of Rock while continuing to run concerts and recitals at LSC-Montgomery. Brendan is now the Visual and Performing Arts Building Manager at Lone Star College-University Park, where he applies all his experiences in tech and music to assist with productions and student and faculty needs.
