Non-equity auditions are now open for the world premiere of The Chosen Ones, a musical by Aaron Alon.
About the Show
The Chosen Ones is a new musical about a group of young LGBTQ+ people in a conversion therapy camp. The musical was written by Aaron Alon and this world premiere will be directed by Aisha Ussery and music directed by Phillip Hall. It will run August 28-Sept. 6, 2025 at the MATCH (Matchbox 3) in Houston, Texas.
Director: Aisha Ussery | Music Director: Phillip Hall | Writer & Composer: Aaron Alon | Casting: Aisha Ussery, Aaron Alon, & Phillip Hall
Available Roles
Six of the eight roles for this production are already in the process of being cast from the first round of auditions, but we are reopening auditions for non-equity actors and singers who are dancers (or strong movers) and who could convincingly play 16-17 year olds for these roles:
- BILLIE: Alto/mezzo-soprano. A non-binary (AFAB*), pansexual who grew up in a small town in the South, 16-17. This character speaks with a hard-R southern accent.
- JO: Baritone/baritenor. A 16-17 year old teen who presents as a boy, but is a pre-transition transgender girl (AMAB*).
*AFAB means “assigned female at birth;” AMAB means “assigned male at birth.”
While some of this may be transposable, here are the vocal ranges for each singing role:

Diversity in Casting
Characters’ races aren’t specified, but the cast should be racially diverse. Performers of all ethnicities, sexes, gender identities, gender expressions, ages, sexual orientations, and types, as well as performers with disabilities, are invited to take part in any audition.
What to Prepare
- Acting: Please prepare and submit video of one or more sides of your choosing. If possible, have someone off-screen read the other parts with you. If you are auditioning for Billie, please read the side in dialect (Hard-R Southern). You may also submit a monologue of your choosing, but this is not required.
- Singing: Please prepare the excerpt below for the character for which you’re auditioning. If you’d like to submit another song of your choosing, please feel free to submit that as well. If you are auditioning for Billie, please sing the excerpt from the show in dialect (Hard-R Southern).
- Dancing: You can submit a dance video/reel if you’d like or just describe your experience and skill level with dance/movement on the audition form.
Sides
Please pick one or more sides that include the character for which you’re auditioning. Feel free to skip long sections where your character doesn’t have lines. If possible, please have someone offscreen read the other lines in the scene with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sing a cappella?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
No, please sing with an accompanist or a backing/kareoke track for your video audition.
Are there roles for actors who don't sing or dance?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
Those roles are no longer available.
When does the show go up?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
The production will run August 28-Sept. 6, 2025 at the MATCH in Houston. There will also be a preview performance of a couple of songs from the show on June 21st, as part of Thunderclap’s New Works Festival. Not all performers will be needed for that, so we’ll work around who’s available.
Is this paid?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
Yes, all cast and crew are paid, though this is a non-union (non-equity) production. See the “Pay” section above for rates.
Can minors audition?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
Yes, minors can audition for the production. However, any actors under 18 who are cast in the production will need to have their parent/guardian sign their contract.
Are you only casting teenagers for the teen roles?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
No! We’ll consider anyone for these roles, as long as they can convincingly read as a teenager. Actors in their 20s, 30s or older are welcome to audition.
Will you provide accommodations for non-local performers?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
Unfortunately, it’s not within our budget to house performers, so we’re looking for performers who have local accommodations.
I have a question not answered here.

Email your question to info@thunderclapproductions.com and we’ll get back to you!
What's the rehearsal schedule?
Your Subtitle Goes Here
Currently, outside of a couple of songs that we may include in a June 21st showcase at the MATCH (not everyone will be needed for that, so it’s fine if you’re not available), music rehearsals are slated to run July 7-22 on Monday and Tuesday evenings, and rehearsals with the director/choreographer are slated to run July 28-August 20, four days a week. Tech and dress rehearsals will be evenings Aug. 25-27. (The show opens Aug. 28th.) Actors are only expected to be at rehearsals when their scenes are being rehearsed.
